“La petite danseuse de quatorze ans” by Rachel Rear (_poetry_)

Waxen fourth position,
Real skirt, real ribbon, real nut brown hair,
Snub nose, childish half-pout.
Skinny, breastless, elephantine-ankled.
Squinted, squeezed, blinded to blindness.
Ugly Galatea who shocked hot violence and would not melt.

Critics criticized, boisterous. Ils sont morts.
She prided herself to bronze. Elle se reste comme ca.
Her still beauty softens us; we wheel graceless pirouettes through Central Park.
